This quote from the brilliant book Story by Robert McKee emphasizes the key.
“Countless writers lavish dressy dialogue and manicured descriptions on anorexic yarns and wonder why their scripts never see production, while others with modest literary talent but great storytelling power have the deep pleasure of watching their dreams living in the light of the screen.”

I’ve read many of Dan Brown’s books. He has a way of drawing readers into his tangled plots until we can’t stop.
So true, Jacqui! Many critics miss the “tangled” part of what Brown does and focus on the author’s pedestrian style of writing. The story web he weaves makes the books enjoyable thrillers. The moral-gray elements and symbols helped his books stand out, propelling him to bestselling status.
Great checklist for a thriller. Thanks!
