While updating a book draft, I kept referring to its Story Spine, Body, and Beats worksheets. I find these writing tools so useful, and that gave me the idea to give a free Story Beats Workbook Package to the first 50 people who sign up using the link on this page.

Update: September 26, 2025
A few longtime subscribers using the Firefox browser commented that the link to the free download showed blank when clicked.
Unfortunately, this is a known issue between the Firefox browser and my product hosting service, Kit. However, the problem only shows up when the Firefox Enhanced Tracking Protection feature is turned on within settings. For example:

If you have experienced this problem, first click the shield shown on the left side of the Firefox address line (i.e., to the left of the URL). For example:

Next, click the Enhanced Tracking Protection button to turn off the feature temporarily. When you close the Firefox browser, the feature turns back on automatically.
FYI: This Firefox issue affects other websites, so it’s not just Kit. For example, if you use WordPress, the help screen’s chat box won’t work with Enhanced Tracking Protection turned on. To be clear, this is a Firefox issue and does not affect other browsers, such as Safari or Chrome.
Problems: Too Many Details & No Writing System
Whether you prefer to free write or plot, both pantsers and plotters often drown in details with no systematic way to organize scenes.
Not using a writing system creates problems.
- A writing goal without an action plan is merely a wish. You can spend months (or longer) writing and never finish your novel.
- If you don’t know the questions to ask, you can’t be sure you’ve gathered and organized the details necessary to please your readers.
- Without those details, you can write scenes that don’t resonate with your target audience.
Solutions: Story Beats Workbook Package (Tools!)
I packaged the best of what top writers have already figured out about story beats.

My goal is to get these useful writing tools into your hands.
Spine & Body Form Example (PDF File)
For instance, you can print the 4-page Spine & Body form to handwrite, or you can open it in a PDF reader (e.g., Apple’s Preview) and use the form-filling tool to type and save your answers. Note: I enabled the PDF Reader editing feature for this download example, if you’re curious how that works.

Story Beats Example (PDF File)
Likewise, you can print the 18-page Story Beats form to handwrite, or you can open the form in a PDF reader (e.g., Apple’s Preview) and use the form-filling tool to type and save your answers. Also, the dozens of prompts in this worksheet encourage your creativity, insights you can use to exceed picky readers’ expectations.

Story Spine, Body, & Beats Worksheet (RTF File)
When I’m recording many details, I like to type my answers into the computer. Later, I can use the computer’s search tool to find the details I need. The 33 pages of open-ended questions guide while giving you plenty of room to record your answers.
RTF files work with popular word processors, such as Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, Scrivener, and many more.

Visual Aids
The infographics reinforce how to use the writing system in your work.

I want to give you a roadmap that leads to your desired destination. To be clear, you control the speed and choose the detours. There’s not much story theory in the workbook, just practical how-to tips and techniques packaged into useful writing tools.
Use these tools to turn your writing goal into an editable manuscript.
What Is in the Story Beats Workbook Package?
The package includes a practical guide with tools to help you lay out your entire novel.
- Story Spine, Body, & Beats Development Workbook (a 34-page PDF guide)
- Outline Beats Worksheet (a 33-page RTF file for your favorite word processor)
- Outline Beats Visuals 3rd Edition (a 9-page PDF file packed with infographics)
- Spine & Body Form Blank (a 4-page PDF file with lines to write your answers)
- Spine & Body Form Example (a 4-page PDF file with lines filled in as examples)
- Story Beats Form Blank (a 19-page PDF file with lines to write your answers)
- Story Beats Form Example (an 18-page PDF file with lines filled in as examples)
You’ll find the package offers more than writing tools to help structure your story. The open-ended questions and their organization will squeeze the rich creative juices out of your little gray cells.
The workbook and worksheets encourage you to complete your novel.

A Few Things to Consider
Before you take me up on this offer, here are a few things to consider.
Credit Card Required
I’ve waived the $10 fee for the Story Beats Workbook package by changing the price to $0.00. However, the product download system at Kit requires a credit card.
I hope you’ll agree with me that the credit card requirement is a minor inconvenience to get the writing tools and save money.
Note: Neither Tame Your Book nor Kit stores credit card information.
Trellis Method Bundle Discount
You’ll notice the “Add to your order” followed by a plus sign allows you to upgrade from the free Story Beats Workbook Package to the full Trellis Method Bundle.
If that’s of interest, you can get the bundle for $24, a bargain compared to the current special pricing of $39 and half off the usual retail pricing of $48.
If you don’t want the bundle, don’t click the plus sign, and you’ll download the Story Beats Workbook package for free ($0.00).
Bottom Line
For new and existing subscribers, you can snag the free workbook or get the bundle for a discount only through this link, and it’s good for the first 50 people who take advantage of this offer.
Enjoy the useful tools, and I’d love to hear your questions and improvement ideas.

I appreciate the boost, Anneli. I hope the tools prove useful. They’re lifesavers for me, allowing me to take care of life’s distractions and then resume writing where I left off.
If I were writing another book I would certainly have a very close look at your guidelines. I wish I had known about them when I wrote the books I’ve done.
Kind words, Anneli. Thank you.
