You’re not alone. Many writers share that frustration, especially after trying several promotions, yet seeing no significant increase in book sales. The keys to unlocking sales include:

  • Write an excellent story.
  • Edit to minimize content errors.
  • Get your book in front of your target readers.

Book Promotion Requires Reader Awareness

Making target readers aware of your book promotion involves research and experimentation to find the right option.

  • Research your options.
  • Promote your book to target readers.
  • Measure the results.
  • Continue what worked and stop what proved ineffective.
  • Repeat.

Note: Please evaluate each book promotion carefully and spend wisely.

A Summary of Book Promotion Options

Guest Posts

You can find bloggers who invite authors to write a guest post. However, to actually produce sales based on a site’s subscribers, you’ll need to research whether their interests align with your target readers. If not, you may spend hours preparing your guest post but gain no sales.

Newspapers, Radio, TV, and Zines

In times past, an interview for a newspaper, radio spot, a TV show, or zine could net sales for an author. With today’s focus on the internet, you’ll probably find it difficult to make any of these options produce book sales. There are exceptions, and if any of these options interest to you, then use search engines to find opportunities. For example, in small towns and rural areas, you may find weekly or monthly newspapers that would like to interview you while plugging your book.

Podcasts

You can find popular podcasts that feature novels. Search for podcasts that discuss and review books similar to the one you’ve written. Before you approach a podcaster about showcasing your book, listen to several of the prior episodes. If you believe a podcast will produce book sales, then make a pitch to that podcaster.

Consider pitching the similarity between your book and prior podcasts. You can use search engines to find podcasts aggregators and browse their portfolio of recordings to find popular podcast about books.

For example:

Promo and Review Sites

Several sites specialize in presenting an author’s book and pricing to target readers.

Promo site prices range from free to hundreds, and well-chosen promotions reach their intended audience, increase sales, and minimize expenses. To be clear, this list of sites does not endorse or recommend one service provider over another, and please keep in mind links worked at the time recorded but may change.

Note: Sites come and go so some links may no longer work.

I had a bump in sales after a few YouTubers read/reviewed my books. But I only asked those whom I follow (and add comments on their videos).

Makes perfect sense, and while work, it can continue to payoff as more people view the videos.
